I honestly think that Joseph Smith would be excommunicated from the modern LDS church today. I also applaud your leap of faith to do the hard things and follow God as you see best. Without a doubt this is a hard choice however I know that God will see this and recognize your love for him.<br /><br />I have had several conversations with people about the LDS church and they are simply afraid of thinking about anything critically because they are worried where it might lead them. This is not where God wants his people to be. We must trust in God and be willing to do whatever he wants us to do, wherever he wants us to do it, and however he wants us to do it.
